Aim High and Never Settle

When Ion and Georgeta Alecu left their native Romania to come to the United States, they didn't quite know what to expect, but they determined that their daughter would be afforded the benefits of a quality education-one that would open doors that had been so tightly closed to themselves.

Knowing full well that some type of scholarship would be the only way to realize their dream, Alice and her parents went to work navigating the scholarship process.

The result? Alice was awarded a four-year academic and talent scholarship. Her story is a shining example of the opportunities available to all students, and what can be accomplished when families work together to seek out assistance.

Last spring, Alice Alecu was kind enough to share her story with Scholarship Prep. Our Hot Topic today includes highlights from this interview. The entire interview is available to paid subscribers.

Q. You must have had super grades and test scores for the university to offer such a generous award?

Alice: Actually, I was mostly an A and B student in high school, both in Romania and in the United States.

Q. Your parents were native Romanians. How instrumental were they in helping you discover and nurture your passion?

Alice: Their support came in the form of constant encouragement. They told me I could do, or become, whatever I wanted in this life as long as I stayed focused and worked hard.

Q. What did you personally think about the scholarship process? Was it difficult?

Alice: In my opinion, the main reason that most students do not apply for a scholarship is the lack of information.

Q. What's the one thing you wish you had known prior to engaging in the scholarship process?

Alice: I wish I had known about all the various resources that are available to students seeking scholarships. I only had time to look into a small percentage of everything out there.
