New scholarships are born, even in economic downturns.
Even as many of us find our wallets thinner and our bills more
difficult to manage, announcements of new scholarships continue
to appear in the news. Many such scholarships are born as memorials
to those who have recently passed on.
Just to give you an idea about the many scholarships available
all over this great nation, we highlight one such scholarship which
was announced just last week.
Our example is the Eve Marie Carson Carolina Way Scholarship, set
up in memory of a much-loved student of the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill, who died in March of 2008.
Carson was a student at UNC who served as student body president.
The scholarship is named Carolina Way, because Carson often referred
to the Carolina Way, which she defined as "excellence with
a heart."
This simple definition gives insight to what it takes for students
to receive this scholarship. "Recipients will be chosen for
academic excellence, observable optimism and enthusiasm, and a proclivity
to connect and engage diverse people," reads the announcement.
Carson herself was not a resident of North Carolina, but was from
Georgia. Perhaps this is why the scholarship actually gives preference
to out-of-state students -- and therefore offers a substantial discount
to the student who wins this scholarship.
UNC is a state university, and as such offers a lower tuition for
in-state students -- $4,066 per year. Tuition for non-residents
is listed at $21,954. Quite a difference! The Carolina Way Scholarship
covers full tuition, fees, and room and board. Oh, yeah. And summer
enrichment opportunities and study abroad. Wow!
Such an opportunity makes this university very attractive to a lucky
non-resident who can pull down this scholarship.

Honors Carson With New Scholarship
Did I say lucky?
Rather, it takes - not luck - to get good scholarships like this
one. Instead, those who look ahead and prepare themselves can become
the good candidates that colleges and universities are looking for.
The scholarships are out there! Be sure to help your student become
the type of applicant they are seeking.
