They moved from Tennessee to Michigan.

What will you do?

They moved from Tennessee to Michigan, leaving their home and friends behind.

Others pulled their students from private or charter schools and put them back in the public system.

Still others chose to stay in their starter homes rather than move to bigger homes (in possibly better school districts) as their families grew.

What will you do to secure college scholarships for your child?

Many, many families made their choice for Kalamazoo public schools because of this urban public school's Promise: "the guarantee of college scholarships if their children graduate from Kalamazoo Public Schools."

Why would a public school district offer such a promise of college scholarships?

In a district where the high school dropout rate was a problem, the Promise was a way to encourage students to stay in school, with a future that included college, even if they could not afford the tuition of higher education themselves.

II really didn't consider KPS before The Promise," says one parent. "I thought we could do better as far as quality goes."

And the family who chose to move to Kalamazoo? "[A]ll kinds of people tried to tell me to look elsewhere for schools," says the father. "But I told them The Kalamazoo Promise was one reason we moved here."

Such an approach has benefited the school district as well as its families. The school system is pleased that The Promise is encouraging families to move into and stay in the district. Since 2004, the K-12 population has decreased 6% statewide; but in Kalamazoo, it has increased 17%. As a result, the Kalamazoo school district receives more state funding (which is granted based on school enrollment). Even in a difficult budget year due to the economy, "Kalamazoo will be in a little better shape than most districts," says the Deputy Superintendent.

The above families are glad they made their decision. College costs continue to rise, but they've already answered the question: How will we pay for college?

Moving 527 miles to enroll one's children in a particular public school seems a drastic move. But such a decision shows how serious one family takes the securing of college monies.
