Michigan, Idaho break Promises:

What can a poor college student do?

The states of Michigan and Idaho announced this month that their Promise Scholarship programs will be cut, as both states must scale back their own expenditures.

Michigan's legislature cut that state's Promise Scholarship on October 1, which provided up to $4000 to students who took the Michigan Merit Exam.

Idaho as well is considering a proposal to "scale back" on its program. That state is simply reducing their assistance, doling out only $400 instead of the promised $500 per student this year.

These cuts in scholarship monies come in the wake of many public universities and colleges across the nation already struggling under cuts in operating expenses because state revenues have also decreased. Will these institutions raise their tuition costs to make up the difference?

In the meantime, students must find some other way to fund their education.

What can a poor college student do?
  • In Michigan, college students across the state are calling their legislators to get the funds reinstated. Their Governor Jennifer Granholm agrees, recognizing a priority for education. But it remains to be seen if the monies will be restored by the Michigan Senate.

  • Idaho's 9,200 college students will simply have to find another way to pay that tuition. Their funding was, after all, only cut by $100.

  • For those of us who still have students in high school, we have opportunity to increase the merit awards that come our way by developing our students into good candidates for the best scholarship monies out there.

As funds dry up in one area, they may yet become available in another. Indeed, Ashford University in Iowa is announcing this week an offering for full tuition scholarships.
